The Hunger for Depth and Meaning is a set of 10 CDs containing sixty-nine extracts from John Main's spoken teachings arranged thematically in eight sections. The talks offer a clear and comprehensive overview of the teaching on Christian prayer by a contemporary spiritual master. They retain the authority, simplicity and humor with which Fr John taught. The transcripts of these talks are published as a book under the same title. John Main's teaching addresses people in all walks of life who are struggling to find depth and meaning in their lives.

"I know of no other teaching in this form that carries the spirit of the gospel, the living Word, so directly and purely straight into the heart. His voice varies over the years the tapes were made. In the early ones you hear the physical vigor and passion of his full teaching authority. In the talks recorded in his last months of life one hears his voice grow weaker. But there is a different kind of strength." Laurence Freeman OSB

Reviewer: Kim from England,
In the year, in which we mark the 25th anniversary of the death of John Main, Peter Ng has given us a treasure of a book. ‘The hunger for depth and meaning’ based on original talks of John Main, as compiled and edited by Peter, gives us a beautiful and comprehensive overview of the teaching. The book is clearly set out with the sections logically following one from the other, taking us right through the essential teaching of our tradition and finishing with the significance of meditation as a way of being. As I read through the chapters in the book or listened to the CD’s, I was pleased to meet the familiar themes in a new voice; the clarity and simplicity of Father John’s words as recorded here in this book made me see these ‘old friends’ in a new, refreshing light. I am always amazed what depth of thought is hidden in the apparent simplicity, affording every time new insights. For those new to the teaching this book will be indispensible; it is comprehensive, yet simple; a clear and inspiring introduction to Christian Meditation. The individual talks recorded in the book itself and on the accompanying CD’s are the ideal length to make it a valuable resource for any group leader or lone meditator to use as an introduction to meditation. In my opinion it really is required reading for anyone who is serious about practicing in our tradition. In my role as International School Coordinator I warmly recommend it as one of our essential ‘text-books’. If you only have time to read one book this year make it ‘The hunger for depth and meaning’.
