Why are we here?

Laurence Freeman, OSB

Why we are here is a question we need to keep before us if we are to live a life of conversion. Our call as Christians, Fr Laurence says, is to come to a state of unbroken openness to the prayer of Christ in our hearts: 'I live no longer but Christ lives in me.' It is a call to abandon our own wills and move beyond the prison of the ego. Fr Laurence teaches meditation as a way to this freedom. The discipline of faithfully repeating the mantra unhooks us from the ego at its root and leads us to a sense of community, to love. We begin to enjoy the fruits of the Spirit.

Fr Laurence is a Benedictine monk of the Olivetan Congregation and director of The World Community for Christian Meditation.
